Recurrent ear infection

Recurrent infections of the middle ear are common, particularly in children. They can present with earache and a fever. If there is enough pressure in the middle ear to create a hole in your ear drum, then discharge will be seen coming from the ear canal.

Recurrent ear infections can be treated with a combination of painkillers and antibiotics if required. Occasionally surgery is offered. Surgery might include the placement of a grommet or ventilation tube through your eardrum. Occasionally, if your ear drum has become perforated and will not heal naturally, surgery to repair the hole might be the best way forwards.
