Sometimes voice changes are due to a change in the structure or lining of your voice box. These can usually be diagnosed by endoscopy performed in the clinic. Treatment may include voice therapy and we work closely with speech therapist with special interest in voice disorders.
Sometimes we treat these conditions with surgery. Surgery is useful to define the problem as tissue can be removed and examined by the pathologist. We would often do this to exclude cancer as a cause for your symptoms but this also may help with diagnosis and treatment of non cancerous conditions.
Operations on your voice box can be carried out in the clinic under local anaesthetic or under a general anaesthetic which gives the advantage of being able to remove more tissue without causing some of the problems you may have if you are awake.
