Voice box cancer is uncommon in non-smokers and usually presents with persistent voice change. Anyone with persistent voice change should be checked urgently particularly if they are a smoker or have been a smoker in the past. The diagnosis is usually made by a biopsy and scans may also be required. Biopsies can be taken from your voice box in the clinic or sometimes we would recommend doing this under a general anaesthetic in the operating theatre.
Voice box cancer is generally treated with either surgery alone or radiotherapy or a combination of the two. Occasional chemotherapy or immunotherapy is also used.
People who have had treatment for voice box cancer may need long term follow up. We happy to provide or individualised following for patients who have these conditions and prefer to have longer term checks.
