Thyroid nodules are common and usually benign (non-cancerous). If looking closely with a scan about 50 to 60 out of 100 people will have a nodule in the thyroid gland. A much smaller proportion of these people the lump is either visible or can be felt. 95 out of 100 thyroid nodules on non-cancerous.
The simplest and most efficient way to check the thyroid nodule is with an ultrasound scan. An ultrasound scan can be used to ‘grade’ a thyroid nodule which gives us guidance as to whether any further tests such as a biopsy are required. Different types of biopsies may be recommended, most commonly using a fine needle. Sometimes a core biopsy which involves a larger needle and takes a bigger sample of tissue will be more appropriate.
