Difficulty swallowing or dysphagia is a common problem and can be caused by many factors. We will assess your symptoms before examining your throat in detail with an endoscope that is passed through your nose. Occasionally further tests are required such as an examination of your swallowing tube and stomach (OGD) or functional tests of your swallowing (swallowing a die whilst X-rays are performed: contrast swallow for fluoroscopy).
Once we have diagnosed the cause of your swallowing problem we can usually help by suggesting targeted treatments. This may include surgery. Swallowing therapy is also often recommended and we work closely with colleagues in speech and swallowing therapy.
